The Executive Board is responsible for facilitating initiatives, meeting with Dartmouth administration and leading GSC departmental representatives. You do not need to be a current (or past) GSC member to apply. If you have any specific questions about the positions, please feel free to email any current Executive Board member.
Candidates for this year’s election will be up soon!

What positions are available?
*These roles are very fluid and are shaped by the priorities of the individual holding the position (which could be you!)
President
The President acts as a facilitator for the GSC meetings (both general body and Executive Board), a conduit between the GSC and administration and as a liaison to other schools/institutions. In this role, you have the freedom to initiate and collaborate on ideas that you are passionate about and have access to a large network of administrators, students and professionals. You are a team leader and will collaborate with Executive Board members and GSC representatives to work towards collective goals and visions.
Vice President
In conjunction with the President, the Vice President acts as a conduit between the GSC and administration and as a liaison to other schools/institutions. The three key responsibilities of the Vice President are acting as parliamentarian for the GSC, keeping track of GSC recognized student groups, and overseeing ad-hoc committees. As parliamentarian, you are responsible for knowing the GSC Constitution and Bylaws and making sure they are properly applied and followed. During meetings, you are in charge of making sure the GSC follows Robert’s Rules of Order, and you keep track of voting. The Vice President supports the President in their duties and fills in when needed, but you also have the freedom to work on (or start) initiatives you are passionate about. You will work closely with the Executive Board members and GSC representatives to make graduate students' lives better.
Academic Chair
The Academic chair is responsible for proposing, organizing, and overseeing events and advocacy measures in the interest of furthering the scholastic livelihood of graduate students. The three main responsibilities of the academic chair are 1) assembling and working with the GSC academic committee, 2) overseeing the Student Support Fund, and 3) organizing academic events (3 Minute Thesis Competition, Science on Tap, etc). You get to work with a great group of individuals (the rest of the exec boards and GSC members) and can further advocate and work towards changes that positively impact all graduate students, which could include: professional training, addressing power dynamics at Dartmouth, and peer mentoring programs.
CARE Co-Chair(s)
The co-chairs lead the Committee for Addressing Racism and Equity (CARE), which is committed to establishing an equitable, inclusive, and supportive community for students, faculty, and staff members at Dartmouth. The co-chairs head the following sub-branches within CARE: (1) institutional diversity and (2) community network. The co-chairs are responsible for setting goals and action items for their designated sub-branches each term of their elected year based on community input, policy research, and GSC approval. The co-chairs are also responsible for hosting events for MLK Day, Black History Month, and Mental Health Month; posting efforts on social media (@dartmouthcare or “CARE at Dartmouth” on Facebook); and updating the end-of-year report that identifies data about policies, demographics, and forms of discrimination at Guarini and recommendations for actionable changes.
Communications Co-Chair(s)
The Communications Chair records and distributes GSC and executive board meeting minutes; assists the President in the execution of their duties; heads the fall election of department representatives; maintains the GSC social media presence (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) and website, including posting events to the calendar and updating the blog; designs and distributes the weekly Graduate Student Circular; and assembles a committee to effectively address other pertinent issues.
Community Engagement Chair
The Community Engagement Chair plays a pivotal role in creating a more inclusive, supportive, and connected graduate student community at Dartmouth. This position works closely with the Office of Community and Campus Life, as well as various Dartmouth offices, student organizations, and the House system, to enhance the graduate student experience. The Community Engagement Chair focuses on strengthening ties between graduate students and the broader Dartmouth community by organizing networking and social events, advocating for student needs, and increasing awareness of campus resources. More broadly, they develop initiatives to integrate graduate students into campus traditions, foster cross-disciplinary collaboration, and create meaningful opportunities for engagement with the Upper Valley community.
External Affairs Chair
The External Affairs Chair is responsible for addressing policies at the local, national, and international levels that impact graduate students, both domestic and international. This role involves advocating for student interests both within and beyond Dartmouth, engaging in policy discussions, and ensuring that graduate students are informed about relevant legislative and institutional changes. The Chair will also build and maintain relationships with key Dartmouth offices, such as the Office of Visa and Immigration Services (OVIS) and other campus resources, to support students navigating policy-related challenges. Another role would be to act as a liaison between the graduate students and Dartmouth Votes program (a nonpartisan group focused on supporting civic engagement efforts by and for Dartmouth students) by serving on the Dartmouth Votes Coalition. The coalition consists of students from the Dartmouth Civics Student Association, Dartmouth Student Government and the NAACP chapter at Dartmouth, and work closely with the town of Hanover as well as Heather Drinan from the Office of Government Relations. The role will involve attending ad hoc meetings for the coalition, led by Edward McKenna (Assistant Dean of Student Life), and promoting their efforts among the graduate student community. Through advocacy, collaboration, and outreach, the External Affairs Chair works to ensure that graduate student concerns are represented and addressed at all levels.
Finance Officer(s)
The finance officer is in charge of balancing the GSC account, reviewing and processing business expense reimbursement submissions and other requests, presenting financial information at GSC meetings, generating financial reports to be published, preparing a budget proposal for the next fiscal year, advising the GSC on financial matters, and serving as a point of contact for graduate students on finance questions. You will also work with the executive board, meet with the graduate deans, and support the graduate student community.
Service Chair
The GSC service chair is responsible for developing volunteer projects and maintaining relationships with the local service organizations in the Upper Valley. The GSC service chair works with the service committee to plan events, lead service-related activities, maintain the service portion of the GSC webpage and Service Committee Facebook page, and manage the Service Chair finances.
Social Co-Chair(s)
The Social Chair(s) work with the Social committee to propose, develop, and facilitate termly social events for the graduate student community. The Chair(s) can collaborate with the GSC reps and executive team to come up with ideas for fun events the grad students would like to possibly see throughout the year. You will work with Guarini administration, local community partners, and each other to orchestrate aspects of the events such as renting event space, setting up logistics of the event, prepping and decorating for the event, and keeping track of the Social Budget. Missing in the 2020-2022 years were our formal dances, which are typically among the largest events hosted by the GSC Social Committee and we had to get creative with mostly virtual events, which is something that can be incorporated into future social events so more of our community can be involved! Don’t forget to let the creativity flow and have fun with it!
Student Life Chair
The Student Life Chair and their committee members organize events and advocate for policies that support student health and wellness. We have traditionally focused on mental health issues and resources, but the committee can support anything in the realm of improving student life. For example, we work closely with the Counseling Center to provide Suicide Prevention Workshops for the community and we work with members of Guarini to populate Mental Health Month with supportive events, initiatives, and materials.
